I love finding a new mystery series. When in NYC recently, I ran across the 8th novel in the Detective Joe Sandilands series by Barbara Cleverly, Strange Images of Death- yummy! How had I missed these? Upon my return to Nashville, I immediately acquired the first novel, The Last Kashmiri Rose. (I borrowed it from my mom; not new to her!)
In the first novel, WWI veteran and Scotland Yard Inspector Sandilands is temporarily assigned to a post in Calcutta. On the eve of his return to England, he is asked by the Acting Governor of Bengal to investigate a suspicious death in that province.
I guessed the identity of the murderer immediately, but the vivid portrait of the final days of the British Empire makes up for the obvious whodunit.
Sandilands apparently has to wait a while longer for his transfer back to London as the next three novels take place in India as well. I look forward to reading all of these.
