Last Friends by Jane Gardam
In the final novel in the Old Filth trilogy, Jane Gardam spotlights Terence Veneering, a pivotal but shadowy character in the story of Sir Edward Feathers and his wife Betty, who were the subjects of the previous novels, Old Filth and The Man in the Wooden Hat.
Emerging from a childhood as peculiar as his nemesis Feathers (a/k/a Old Filth), Veneering also lands in Hong Kong where he acquires fame, fortune, and the affections of Betty.
Despite Gardam’s compelling storytelling, you won’t fully appreciate this novel if you haven’t read the other two. I recommend reading all three of these sly novels-from the beginning. Brilliant!
