The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Amazon
This new comedy series from Amy Sherman-Palladino (“Gilmore Girls,” “Bunheads”) is my new fav! (And I’m counting The Crown and Frankie & Grace, which I also love.)
Miriam “Midge” Maisel (nee Weissman) is enjoying an idyllic 1950s life- two adorable children, a spacious Manhattan apartment, and an extensive, expensive wardrobe. But the bubble bursts when her husband announces (on Yom Kippur!) that he’s leaving her for his secretary.
Forced to move back in with her parents, the shell-shocked Mrs. Maisel charmingly careens about town and ultimately finds her groove as a stand-up comic.
Admittedly part of my obsession with this series comes from the NYC locale. The sunny sets are exactly right– the elegant classic six on the Upper West Side, the late B. Altman & Company in all its mid-century glory, the bohemian downtown clubs. But the snappy dialogue, gorgeous costumes (the hats!), and dead-on casting are what set this series apart. Tony Shalhoub as Mrs. Maisel’s long-suffering father is terrific. But the real star is Rachel Brosnahan, who won a Golden Globe for her performance as the funny and furious Mrs. Maisel.
Mad Man without the angst.
