So Oprah has forgiven author Jonathan Franzen. For those of you who do not slavishly follow Oprah’s every move, Mr. Franzen declined to be selected for Oprah’s Book Club in 2001 citing the “middlebrow” nature of her choices. Oprah obligingly did not choose The Corrections for her club, and the novel won that year’s National Book Award for fiction.
However time heals all wounds. Mr. Franzen’s latest book, Freedom, has been selected as the next pick for Oprah’s Book Club. In an interview last month, Mr. Franzen told The Minneapolis Star-Tribune that he “would be happy” to be selected, so clearly forgiveness is working both ways.
My friend Jane gave me a copy of Freedom for my birthday, and I am zipping through it. I’m not sure why this family saga is so compelling, especially since some of the characters are rather annoying, but it is!
