This Body of Death by Elizabeth George
I didn’t realize how much I missed the mystery novels of Elizabeth George until I started her new book, This Body of Death. In a fit of pique, I boycotted George’s last several books because she killed off one of my favorite characters, quite unnecessarily to my mind! It was a cheap ploy usually employed by television writers, who in an effort to shake up a long running series concoct some tragedy in the last episode of the season. Elizabeth George is better than a TV writer, and the Inspector Lynley series was completely engaging without the additional melodrama.
In any event, at the urging of several George fans, I allowed myself to be persuaded to read her latest. All my favorite characters are here, Detective Inspector Lynley, DS Barbara Havers, DS Winston Nkata, and a new colleague, Isabelle Ardery, whom I’m not sure I like. Beautifully written, with a sophisticated but not tricky plot line, George’s novel is fast-paced and thoughtful. I’m glad I’ve come back to her work.
