Detective Sergeant George Cross of the Avon and Somerset police is on the autistic spectrum. He is pedantic, persistent, and fiercely solitary. None of this makes him popular with his colleagues except that he has the highest conviction rate in the region. For this he is tolerated. His long-suffering partner, DS Ottey, a single mother of two, understands Cross better than most but still finds him maddening. The only person in Cross’s orbit who is entirely understanding is his father, Raymond.
The first novel in the series (The Dentist) is a bit stilted, but subsequent books are better as Cross’s personality is more fully developed and new, complementary characters are introduced.
