How to Age Disgracefully by Clare Pooley
When recent empty nester Lydia applies for the job running the local Senior Citizens’ Social Club, she envisions quiet, grateful pensioners enjoying bingo and bridge. She is quickly disabused of this notion at her first meeting when the small but rowdy group scoffs at her tame suggestions.
The aged group includes a mysterious and bossy widow, a failed actor, an activist mega knitter, and a former long-distance lorry driver with lilac hair.
The seniors and Lydia are still arguing when the ceiling of the Community Center partially collapses. The damage prompts the local council to threaten to close the club. Not bloody likely!
Recognizing that they need reinforcements, the seniors partner with other groups in the building to save the center. Cute toddlers from the day care, a teenage dad, and an orphaned dog join the fight with chaotic and in some cases life-changing results.
A bit schmaltzy but entertaining, and often laugh-out -loud funny.
