The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman (Book 1)
This novel kept appearing on various “recommended for you” lists, but I initially resisted buying it as it sounded rather insipid, like those mystery novels where the amateur sleuth’s cat is a major character.
In Osman’s novel, four residents of a posh British retirement community surreptitiously study cold cases; they call themselves the Thursday Murder Club. When a real murder takes place on the premises, the band of seniors is eager to tackle a live case, much to the annoyance of the local police.
In the tradition of Agatha Christie, The Thursday Murder Club is a craftier novel than the predictable premise suggests. And the four amateur sleuths are distinct personalities rather than merely senior stereotypes.
A clever English cozy with bite and laugh-out-loud humor.
And a 2025 Netflix film starring Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan.
