The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion Vol 1-8 by Beth Brower
More my style is a series of historical novels which were recommended to me by my friend Jerry.
In 1883, orphan Emma Lion moves to London to reside in the family home (Lapis Lazuli) that she is due to inherit when she comes of age. The current occupant of her house, located in the delightfully odd neighborhood of St. Crispian, is her cousin Archibald Flat who is essentially squatting and running thru her inheritance.
Despite her despicable relative, who relegates her to rooms in the attic, Emma is thrilled to be back at Lapis Lazuli. With limited resources, but unlimited time, Emma keeps a witty, self-deprecating daily journal of her new London life.
One unwelcome limitation to Emma’s freedom is her domineering Aunt Eugenia, who insists that Emma attend a few society events, if only to serve as a foil to her cousin and friend the beautiful Arabella. Upside: she supplies Emma with an extensive society wardrobe. Downside: she occasionally, dangerously, asks about Emma’s nonexistent chaperon.
Over time, Emma acquires a quirky clique of like-minded friends: a poetry loving vicar, a war photographer, a remarkably open-minded duke, a friendly banker, and an ambitious housemaid/cook.
Charming!
