Binocular Vision by Edith Pearlman
I love a late life success story, so I was thrilled when my book club chose a collection of short stories, Binocular Vision, by Edith Pearlman.
In 2011, a young editor asked the seventy-four-year-old Pearlman if he could publish a selection of her stories. Pearlman was not an unknown, but her more than 200 stories had been published by small literary magazines and nonmainstream presses. She agreed, and Binocular Vision was a hit. Pearlman was nominated for the 2011 National Book Award and won the National Book Critics Circle Award and the PEN Malamud Award.
Pearlman’s remarkably diverse short stories are gems. Not a word wasted! The book is out of print, but you can easily find a used copy. Highly recommend.
