Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk
Recommended by my literary friend Laurel, this novel by Polish author Olga Tokarczuk, winner of the Noble Prize for Literature, is part mystery, part fable, and wholly original.
Janina Duszejko is a retired teacher living quietly in rural Poland. She is the caretaker for several summer homes in the area, a translator of William Blake, a serious believer in the predicative authority of the stars, and an animal rights activist. Since she is elderly (and quirky), she is automatically dismissed by most of the community, but has a small, loyal group of friends, who either share her hobbies or tolerate them.
When hunters in the community start keeling over in rather gruesome ways, Janina is convinced that the animals are taking revenge for all of their slaughtered friends and family. She is vocal and enthusiastic about her pet(!) theory; the police not so much.
Weirdly wonderful.
