Overboard by Sara Paretsky
I promised that I wouldn’t read another novel featuring V.I. Warshawski, author Sara Paretsky’s busybody, sanctimonious detective. But character flaws aside, Paretsky can move a plot along, so I got roped in yet again.
Like most of Warshawski’s adventures, it all begins with an incident that is none of her business. Despite having unfinished assignments from her paying clients, V.I. cannot resist investigating a crime she stumbles upon by Lake Michigan. In addition to the lakeside assault, V.I. takes on a pro bono assignment for her neighborhood synagogue, shelters two runaways, breaks into a nursing home, and uncovers a real estate scam, all while being pursued by a vengeful Chicago cop and various other unsavory types.
Never a dull moment, if highly improbable.
